A far-more sophisticated black box technology will be needed for the ultimate goal of automatic notification of computer-generated injury prediction that is available immediately upon crash to emergency care providers. In addition to the change in velocity at impact (delta-V), a more-detailed description of the crash pulse, the direction of impact, and forces acquired from occupant compartment contacts (such as seatbelt load, steering wheel load, knee bolster forces, etc) are needed to accurately and automatically predict injury type and severity.

A step chart is similar to a hybrid column/line chart. Figure 8-19 shows two charts that use the data in columns A and B. The top chart is a standard line chart, and the bottom chart is a column chart modified to have a gap width of 0 and no border colors. A typical step chart is similar to the column chart, but the columns are not visible. Rather, a step chart depicts a single line with the data points connected at right angles. Excel does not provide a step chart type, but you can create such a chart by using an XY chart, along with X error bars and Y error bars. Figure 8-20 shows an example of this type of chart. Column A and B contain the same data used in the previous charts. In addition, this chart uses the data in columns C and D as the source for the X error bars and Y error bars.

All Fireworks effects are tweaked in the Effects section of the Property inspector, which changes to offer different attributes according to the effect chosen. The Inner Bevel and Outer Bevel effects are similar, but result in completely different looks. The Inner Bevel effect uses the object s color to create an edge within the object itself, whereas the Outer Bevel effect uses a separate color chosen by the designer to make a border around the outside of the object. The Drop Shadow sets off any vector, text, or bitmap object with a shadow behind the figure large or small, subtle or bold, your choice. Emboss removes the fill and stroke from any selected object and builds edges from the underlying canvas or objects to make it appear as if the object is emerging from the background, or sinking into it. Fireworks Glow effect creates a soft glow around an object. Using a combination of other Fireworks tools and commands, any object can have a perspective shadow. In Fireworks, you can easily apply multiple effects. Custom effects combinations can be saved and quickly recalled through the use of Fireworks styles and the Styles panel. You can share filters among multiple, compatible applications, to have access to them wherever you re working. In the next chapter, you discover how to use Fireworks to arrange and composite different objects.
